Factors That Decide Your Four-Wheeler Insurance Premium

Your four-wheeler insurance premium isn’t a random number. 1) Insured Declared Value (IDV)

IDV is the sum insured for your car. A higher IDV usually increases your own damage premium, because the potential payout is higher in case of theft or total loss. Choosing an unrealistically low IDV can reduce premiums, but it can also reduce your claim payout. The right balance is to keep IDV close to your car’s fair market value.

2) Car Make, Model, Variant, and Repair Costs

Two cars of the same price can still have different premiums. Why? Because insurers price in repair severity and parts availability.

Premiums can be higher for:

  • Expensive variants and higher trims
  • Vehicles with costly body parts/electronics
  • Models with higher theft risk or higher claim frequency trends

3) Age of the Vehicle

As your car gets older, its IDV typically drops, which can reduce your damage premium. However, for some older vehicles, the risk of breakdowns and claims may rise, and certain add-ons may become unavailable or restricted. This becomes important during car insurance renewal.
